Gonepteryx cleopatra
Okay, thanks for clarifying that, bayucca. Such a pretty butterfly to see flying around with their bright yellow/orange wings.
No, the Brimstone is Gonepteryx rhamni, very common one in Central Europe and Northern Europe (not Cnetral Mediteranean) and Cleopatra is another species from the same genus: Gonepteryx cleopatra, which is the common species in the Southern area (Mediteranean area, including Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey for example).
So bayucca, is this the same butterfly as http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/......
Are they called brimstone in central Europe and Cleopatra in Spain? Is that the difference?
Brimstone is the common name of the other one from Central Europe. This one is called Cleopatra or Cleopatra Butterfly.
thanks for the appreciation martini. There were so many of these butterflies on this bramble patch, but after many photos, I only had one with the wings open, as they always keep their wings closed when feeding. They are so beautiful when flying, with that bright orange/yellow patch on their wings...
Well done pamsai, you've caught it feeding on the bramble flowers. This looks like a female feeding and the more colorful males in flight.
