Black Prince Cicada

Psaltoda Plaga

Description:

35mm fore-wing with faint smoky marks. Mostly black with reddish marks and possibly red eyes although they are much darker than the Redeye Cicada. I guess it could be a female Redeye but the wings seem short and the wing markings are less pronounced. The head looks correct though. Too picky?

Habitat:

Blown from its tree at night this cicada was skidding about on a concrete path quite happily just a few feet from a light.

Notes:

Another one I have been trying to identify. The exposure has been pushed heavily from the original images for clarity but colours remain true enough apart from image 3 which is purely for measurements. # Black xmas cicada It looks more like a Little Baron Psaltoda mossi but is out of its range I will use bennyruner's ID as my experience is less

A lovely female indeed although Black Prince. Well out of range of Little Baron which is only found over parts of QLD and inland northern NSW
