Southern White Admiral

Limenitis reducta

Description:

The Southern White Admiral (Limenitis reducta) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. The wingspan is 22-27 mm. The butterfly flies from May to August depending on the location, and was spotted in June in Northern Spain. Differences with the usual White admiral, Limenitis camilla, are twofold, firstly the is an extra white spot in cell in L. Reducta on the upperside, and the underside has just one row of black spots on the hindwing. The base colour is slightly redder too.

Habitat:

It flies in light woodland and along roadsides cutting through denser forests. It glides gracefully with wings flat open between wing beats. It can often be found resting at about head height on shrubs and trees as if it is defending a territory.

thanks for the ID again, Daniele. I don't understand some of these names, though. This is called a white, when it is mostly black!
