Prickly Pear

Opuntia sp.

Description:

Green pads with reddish spines. Cold morning in the desert and everything was covered in ice.

Habitat:

Desert flats at the base of mountains. Black Gap WMA.

Yea, it's hard to leave the desert without looking like you've been beaten up haha. Cool place, but also a painful place!

Keep shooting! Those yucca leaves do hurt; I was running around (like an idiot) chasing a bird in Joshua Tree several years ago and one of those leaves impaled my leg!

No problem. The Spiny-fruit is endemic to the Big Bend area. I love your photo of the yucca with icicles by the way.

Thanks for the suggestion Joshua, but I'm not so sure about this one. IDing prickly pear without flowers is really hard, especially if you're trying to call it a hybrid. The link says it's rare, and I saw this or similar looking prickly pear all over the place. So without any flowers, I think I will just leave it at genus level. Thanks though :)
