Shoebill

Balaeniceps rex

Description:

The Shoebill is a tall bird (4 1/2 ft) resembling a stork, but is actually in the family of the pelicans. It is uniformly gray with a large brown spotted flesh colored bill.

Habitat:

It is found in swamps and marshes of central Africa as the bulk of their diet is fish and small water creatures (frogs, snakes, etc).

Notes:

This individual was in the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. It is strange enough I included it even though it is in a zoo.
