Ganoderma lucidum
Horizontal fungal growth on a birch tree; upper surface rich orange-brown at centre, becoming lighter toward the edge. Underside plain and very pale, almost white.
Wikipedia has this to say: The lingzhi mushroom or reishi mushroom (traditional Chinese: 靈芝; pinyin: língzhī; Japanese: reishi; Vietnamese: linh chi; literally: "supernatural mushroom") encompasses several fungal species of the genus Ganoderma, and most commonly refers to the closely related species, Ganoderma lucidum, Ganoderma tsugae and Ganoderma sichuanense. G. sichuanense enjoys special veneration in East Asia, where it has been used as a medicinal mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used medicinally. Lingzhi is listed in the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and Therapeutic Compendium.
Hi Mark, no, not yet! Thanks for the tip - next time I'll take pictures of the underneath!
Hi Tracey. Any shots of the pores underneath? That's often more important for ID than the top. Possibly a Ganoderma species?
