Snake was about 2 feet long. Was motionless when we encountered it. It curled its head, then turned around and went into the weeds. No hissing, rattling or striking.
My inclination was milksnake as well. Thanks for the input!
It is an eastern milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum)
