Mason wasp (female)

Pterocheilus quinquefasciatus

Description:

About 12-14 millimeters in body length, colored as shown. Note larger size, dark face, and shorter, blunt-tipped antennae. These are all female characteristics.

Habitat:

Wasp was taking nectar on flowers of a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast open field of degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, and scattered elm trees.
