American Painted Lady

Vanessa virginiensis

Description:

easily distinguishable by its two large eyespots on the ventral side

Habitat:

forest edge, scrub

Notes:

I spotted this out at Mud lake around 5.30pm. It flew for a little when I first spotted it, but it must have been winding down or something, because it let me get really close when it landed and never moved. I was lucy to get dorsal and ventral shots.

Thanks Toshimi. I really enjoy your spottings. I've been to Thailand a few times, really love it there.

Thanks Keith, Mayra and Noel, I know what you mean, the ventral view is very different from the dorsal.

A beauty. I just started seeing them around here this year, but they have all been fairly ragged.
