Giant Black Cockroach

Megaloblatta longipennis

Description:

This cockroach is a Record Breaker! Although Guinness lists the largest cockroach as being "over 3.5 inches in length," this one is a good 4.5 inches, nearly 11½ cm. It is nearly black on the dorsum with a reddish brown venter.

Habitat:

We found this cockroach outside of our house in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

A world-renowned entomologist, who was visiting at the time, said he had never seen anything like it. Our jungle chickens, which normally line up for cockroaches, wouldn't go near it. We heard them making a commotion and thought it might be a snake so went to investigate. Too funny.
