Common Gallinule chick

Gallinula galeata

Description:

There were two chicks hiding while mom swam around watching me. They were calling to mom so I backed away. The chicks swam out to meet their mom to get fed. "The Gallinule has dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red facial shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield." - Wikipedia

Habitat:

Small lake that's surrounded by reeds and cattails in a local park.

Notes:

"These fledge after 40–50 days, become independent usually a few weeks thereafter, and may raise their first brood the next spring. When threatened, the young may cling to the parents' body, after which the adult birds fly away to safety, carrying their offspring with them." "The AOU voted to change the taxonomy of the America's Common Moorhen to the Common Gallinule, Gallinula galeata." - Wikipedia
