Cottonmouth

Agkistrodon piscivorus

Description:

I about stepped on him while walking from the beach on Seabrook Island. He couldn't have been more than 30 yds from the beach heading towards it. I believe it is a baby Timber Rattlesnake. He had no rattles that I heard or saw.

Habitat:

Seabrook Island, Barrier Island, Sand Dunes

I run into cottonmouths a LOT (I work at a wildlife refuge as a bio tech) and that's def a cottonmouth. Sorry. (And I've seen timber rattlesnakes when I worked in Missouri and the bands are very different from what's in this photo.)

Beautiful little Crotalid! I hear the timbers are very "friendly" was this the case?

Definitely looks like a timber. Gorgeous! Glad you avoided being bitten.
