Anoplognathus porosus
Merry Christmas everyone! Christmas beetles grow up to 4cm, gold colouring, with green/irridescent gold sheen (many other colour forms); this type grows to about 2.5cm. hard wing covers have dark uneven grooves, tiny hairs on body, legs and antennae glisten with irridescent colour in sunlight. Most often seen around Christmas time as they become active hence the name. Adults feed on eucalypt trees, some areas can become defoliated where beetles are in large numbers.
Found throughout Australia in many forms.

The 'danger time' sounds wonderful!
Thanks martinl, LaurenZ & MacC. It's certainly a well-known beetle. early evening is 'danger time' if you're out and about as they buzz past and slam into you!
What a great photo kd!
Of all the spectacular beetles, this one is the clear favorite for Australians.
