Cotton (or Hibiscus) Harlequin Bug

Tectocoris diophthalmus

Description:

Iridescent metallic coloured bug with distinctive markings along the back of the shield and around the edge. Mixture of Red, blue and green iridescent colours.

Habitat:

Jungle undergrowth.

Notes:

When initially sighted there was a "nest" of about 12 bugs in a circular formation under the shade the leaf, however they quickly scuttled away when hit by the sun. Project Noah helped me to identify this as a Harlequin Bug in nymph stage. Further research shows that they are found throughout Far North Queensland, Australia, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands.

Thanks bayucca - certainly gives me some leads. Will have to investigate your links more closely in the morning when my eyesight is a bit keener - there are definitely similarities here.

Scutelleridae nymph, I would say. Could it be a Tectocoris diophthalmus, early instar nymph?? Obviously only early instars have no red patch behind the head?
