Cicada (moulting)

Unidentified Cicadidae

Description:

I spotted this Cicada, just a little too late. It had completed its moult and was holding onto its exuvia while it allowed its new wings to hang down for an hour or two, to expand and become stiff and strong enough for flight. The process is described in detail in https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-0........

Habitat:

Spotted, in our backyard, at the bottom of a fence made of fishing net (to keep free range chickens out of our vegetable plot).
