Western Comma

Polygonia satyrus

Description:

This is the first time I've found this butterfly nectaring on wildflowers, which they will do occasionally. Recognized by the notched and irregular edge of the wings and the black, orange, and yellow colors.

Habitat:

Spotted in a forest opening nectaring on silvercrown (Cacaliopsis nardosmia).

Notes:

Caterpillars eat stinging nettle.
