Brown-headed Nuthatch

Sitta pusilla

Description:

One of the few birds found almost exclusively in the United States. Climbing headfirst down tree trunks is a characteristic behavior of Brown-headed Nuthatches, as you can see in some of the photos. They have brown heads, black stripes over the eyes, and white undersides.

Habitat:

Their range is restricted to the pine forests of the southeastern states. I saw these in pine flatwoods at Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park

Notes:

There were several of these in the pine trees, and they were quite vocal with one another.
