Black huckleberry

Gaylussacia baccata

Description:

Huckleberries grow wild in much of the eastern U.S. They are not eaten as much, by humans, as blueberries ... unless you have huckleberry bushes on your place. But they're an important food plant for wildlife like birds and small mammals, and deer browse the twigs and foliage.

Habitat:

On the banks of a small pond. Probably transplanted there from the surrounding woods.

Notes:

The last photo was taken a month earlier than the others.
