Southern Lapwing

Vanellus chilensis

Description:

Spotted in Laguna del Diario in Maldonado, Uruguay. The "Tero", as it is called here, is considered the national bird of Uruguay. It nests on the ground and aggressively defends its nest. It is equipped with red bony extensions under the wings (spurs), used to intimidate foes and fight birds of prey. These can be clearly seen in these photos.
