Vulpes vulpes
About the size of a large cat, the red fox is the largest of the fox family. Has an elongated body, short limbs, and a tail longer than half of its body length. In the typical red-morph, coats are generally bright-reddish rusty in color with yellow hints, but can be found with color variations of brown, grey, and black. As solitary opportunistic hunters, the red fox will dine on anything from its traditional hunted prey of rodents, rabbits, and birds, to fruits and veggies, insects, fish, and even garbage and pet foods. Exhibits very cat-like behaviors like playing with its food and signaling to other foxes with scent spots.
Most geographically spread member of the Carnivora, being distributed across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America, and Asia. Prefer to inhibit a mixture of forests and open fields, but will readily make home to human environments on farms, in suburban areas, and even in large cities.
Due to its range having increased alongside human expansion, the red fox has been listed as 'Least Concern for Extinction' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Having being introduced to Australia where it is considered harmful to native mammal and bird populations, the red fox is also listed as one of the "World's 100 Worst Invasive Species."
