Description:

Large polypore, hard and woody, hoof-shaped, with a gray top and black. Often on beech and birch trees.

Habitat:

This fungus grows on living and dead trees, especially beech and birch. It occurs throughout the year.

Notes:

This fungus was used to get the tinder to make wicks of lighters
