Gray Treefrog

Hyla chrysoscelis or Hyla versicolor

Description:

Quite possibly the cutest little metamorph I've ever laid eyes upon :) Gray treefrog metamorphs are the most difficult to find because as soon as they grow all four legs, the attach themselves to emergent vegetation (usually under leaves close to the water). We saw eggs, then tadpoles, waited all summer for these metamorphs and we finally saw a few only days before I had to leave.

Habitat:

Spotted in emergent vegetation over a very shallow scour hole formed by the flooding of the Missouri River in 2011.

Notes:

In areas where the eastern and common gray treefrogs overlap, it is impossible to identify them by anything other than the call.
