Large Golden Spiny Ant

Polyrhachis (Hagiomyrma) sp. Subfamily Formicinae

Description:

Slightly larger than the Golden tailed spiny ant and little more aggressive or defensive, incredibly attractive ants. Tail/abdomen is black and rest of body and head is a shimmering golden colour, body is covered in fine tiny hairs, the four large spines that give these ants their name are also visible, a colony ant, feeds on nectar, pollen and plant material, also collects dew early in the morning, these ones were foraging at great speed as signs of storms approached, nests in soft sand and under logs for added protection.

Habitat:

Found throughout Australia and there are many forms of spiny ant. These ones are located in a dry woodland environment close to flowering angophoras which they are accessing for nectar and are nesting at the base of a timber fence post.
