Fox Sparrow

Description:

Very large sparrow. Eastern 'Red' populations (P. iliaca iliaca) have rufous markings on a gray face, rufous coloring on the back, wings and tail, large dark spots on the breast and flanks.

Habitat:

Mixed pine/hardwood forest; most of the hardwoods are still understory sized with mixed bushes creating a thicket. Located in Coastal Plain along the Savannah River.

Notes:

Fox Sparrows are winter residents in the southeast and move north to breed.
