Northern Cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

Description:

The punk rocker of the bird world

Notes:

No shutter remote. I'm working with Black-capped Vireos on Fort Hood and this Northern Cardinal was incidentally captured in my mist net. His crazed look is response to me not letting him go after he chomped on my finger for a bit. I got a fun shot but he got the last laugh as he pooped on me during release!

Thank you Yasser and everyone else for their comments! I see this species everyday, and it is hard not to take them for granted, but they really are a striking bird. And now I really respect that beak of theirs, very powerful!

"The Northern Cardinal is a territorial song bird. The male sings in a loud, clear whistle from the top of a tree or another high location to defend his territory. He will chase off other males entering his territory."

LOL, Thanks for the details of how you made your capture. I suspected because of the depth of field on this shot, it was a bird that was caught in a net for banding birds. At least he did that on you and not your lens.
