Crested Pigeon

Ocyphaps lophotes

Description:

A robust pigeon with a sharp black crest. Grey all over with shoulders that have tawny to peach coloured feathers. Wing feathers are barred with glints of green and purple.

Habitat:

Open grasslands near water. Not seen in dense forests. Common throughout most of mainland Australia.

Notes:

These are one of two Australian pigeons with crests. The other is the Spinifex pigeon. The crested pigeon is often mistakenly called a "topknot" . The real topknot pigeon is a much larger bird. Spotted this bird in a local nature reserve beside a creek. http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/...
