Black Vulture

Coragyps atratus

Description:

What can I say. They are large birds that are coal black with a bare black head, black bill, black eyes.

Habitat:

Very common throughout lowland jungles in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador. In the pictures they are gathered for a meal of rotten meat.

Notes:

We left the jungle for a trip to Quito and upon returning we found there hadn't been any electricity from the hydro the whole time we were gone. The trees were full of vultures who obviously knew what we would find when we opened the refrigerator/freezer doors. We could smell it as we approached the house. My wife fed her "flock" for several days, making the best of a bad situation. This has happened twice :-(
