Gray Hairstreak

Strymon melinus

Description:

Hairstreaks usually sit with wings closed and move them back and forth in a sliding motion. It is thought that action combines with the hindwing eyespot to create a confusion as to where the head is on this butterfly. Underside of spring/fall form is dark gray, summer form is paler gray.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat garden with many native plants. This one is on the Cut-leaf coneflower, Rudbeckia herbstonne.
