Red Postman

Heliconius erato

Description:

This butterfly landed on an umbrella near us in a cafe in Amsterdam. It's a Heliconius species, either erato or possibly a variety of melpomene, and native to the tropical Americas. I suspect it's an escapee from an exotic butterfly exhibit or a hobbyist's greenhouse.

Habitat:

Central and South America

It is definitely an escapee and it is either Heliconius erato or Heliconius melpomene. No chance to get closer without a picture from the side.
