White-throated Kingfisher

Halcyon smyrnensis

Description:

A White-throated Kingfisher on a habitual perch

Habitat:

The most commonly seen and heard locally and the first and only one yet that i've seen! Lives near the river, perches on tree tops as well as wires

Notes:

It is frequently bullied away from perches by the house crows, it's loud calls at the onset of monsoon (the breeding season) can be heard from a considerable distance, locally called as "Wadda Machhera" (Big Fisher). It usually perches on the same spots in between daily flights for some days before selecting a new one.
