Common Persimmon

Diospyros virginiana

Description:

Medium sized deciduous tree to 60 feet. Dioecious, meaning they are either a male or female tree. Only female bear fruit. Fruit yellow, orange or red 3/4 - 2 1/2 in. in diameter, with several large seeds. They are sweet and edible when fully ripe, astringent when green.

Habitat:

Found in many soil types, in dry woods and fields. These were growing in a riparian area near Lake Lewisville.

Notes:

This is a small-fruited relative of the Japanese persimmon found in grocery stores.
