Tantalus Sphinx Moth

Aellopos tantalus

Habitat:

tropical, larval host plant is the Rubiaceae family. Seen at butterfly garden of a coastal state park in south Florida.

Notes:

I was chaperoning some of my students for a park clean-up, when some said "look a tiny hummingbird!" and indeed the mimicry is very convincing. Managed to get a few shots of this moth while it fluttered about nectaring on Bay-cedar.
