Barred owl

Strix varia

Description:

This bird was sitting right next to a walking path as I approached. When I came too close, it flew off a little ways into the woods. The barred owl hunts by waiting on a high perch at night, or flying through the woods and swooping down on prey. They can sometimes be seen hunting before dark. This typically occurs during the nesting season or on dark and cloudy days.

Habitat:

Mason Farm Biological Reserve

Notes:

This owl was very patient with me as I took many shots so that I could get some good photos for my 2000th spotting on Noah! :)

Thanks for your nice comments Mark, Jacob, suzmonk, Kathleen and Rieko. I love Noah and seeing what everyone observes and posts; it teaches me so much and provides such great entertainment. I've seen wildlife here that I never knew existed and the Project has increased my appreciation for nature each time I visit this site. And even the more common animals in postings often are shown so beautifully! I continue to look forward to what other members share! :)

Marvelous series, Maria! A huge congratulations on this amazing achievement!! Thank you so very much for all that you do; helping out local animals that may have been mistreated, and spreading awareness of unethical animal treatment throughout the world. I'm so glad to have met you through Project Noah!

It looks so surreal, almost like a clay sculpture. 2,000 is a lot of spottings, well done.
