Black-winged kite

Elanus caeruleus

Description:

Unmistakable - the size of a Hobby but has a bulkier body, pointed but broad wings, and short, square cut tail. Pale blue-grey above with black forewing, white below with blackish primaries. Head white with black 'face mask'. Hovers like a kestrel.

Habitat:

Breeds in semi-deserts, open palns, forest fringes by rivers.

Notes:

Spotted in a dry valley with a small river running through it that was recently devastated by fire.
