Branta canadensis &
Winter is difficult for these migrators. While birding today the temperature dipped below zero degrees fahrenheit. The water temperature was warmer than the air, causing the water to give off large amounts of steam. We saw may injured geese. Some had wing injuries, some had chunks of ice frozen to their feet and some birds were frozen to the ice itself. The injured and weak will feed the dozens of bald eagles that live around the lake.

Thank you bfpsroom211!
WOW
So true.
You are absolutely right, Jemma.
Also these kind of spottings make us realize that in spite of what we know we know we are still so ignorant !! Especially about the sufferings and struggles of others!!
I know Jemma! It was kind of a wake up call to be out there the other morning! I helped one goose that was frozen to the ice. The tips of his primary feathers had frozen under the surface and he was in a tiny pocket of water. When he got free he was really weak. Circle of life I guess...the ones that die will help to feed many raptors and wild canines like coyote and fox in the area.
lovely but ;(
Thank you RiekoS!
