Pantherophis alleghaniensis
Juvenile Eastern Black Rat Snake, around 12 - 16" in length.
Found basking on a rotted tree stump in open woods between field and large pond.
Eastern Rat Snakes (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) were formerly known as the Black Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus). Weather: Sunny/clear 80 degrees Humidity: 44% UV: 6 out of 16 Moon Phase: Waning Crescent During our "photo shoot" the little dude retreated into a small hole about 4 inches below his position on the tree.
They changed the name for ratsnakes east of the Appalacians to Patherophis alleghaniensis which has made a mess of the common names too since yellow, gray, and black rats are now all the same thing.
