Prairie Rattlesnake

Crotalus viridis

Description:

Juvenile Prairie Rattlesnake

Habitat:

rock outcrop on hogback

Notes:

Snake was found coiled in foraging posture but got defensive as soon as the cameras we out. :) The ground around the snake had been freshly disturbed and dirt was covering part of the snake. A group of mule deer were close by and may have found/smelled the snake and kicked dirt on it.

Beautiful. Interesting notes. Do deer often behave that way around snakes?
