Description:

Large diving bird with stout, dagger-like bill. Like other specialist diving birds, the legs are situated well back near the tail, making it difficult for loons to walk. Winter and summer plumages differ.

Habitat:

Observed in winter in coastal waters, bays, estuaries, and harbors. Common along the coast of Washington in winter.
