Barred Owl

Strix varia

Description:

Large, dark brown own of eastern woods. The breast is heavily barred. The head is very rounded and the eyes are solid dark. These owls can be very vociferous and often call all during the day, especially in breeding season. They are usually found in or near wet woods. Their call is noted as 'Who Cooks for You, Who Cooks for You All' thus it's often jokingly called the southern owl or the owl with the drawl.
