Polygonia c-album
Comma butterfly is a common woodland species found since early spring in our valley. Medium sized member of Nymphalidae family, some 4 - 6 cm of wingspan. It sports wings with a very irregular, ragged edge; they are predominantly bright orange with irregular brown and yellowish spots. Presented here is, I believe, a male.
Widespread and common, mainly woodland, species of Eurasia and North Africa. It prefers shadowy and moist environment of low density forests. Here, found on edges of our beautiful Bagasse forest (deciduous, predominantly oak, forest - photo 5) on France-Switzerland border, in a valley of lake Geneva, just in between Jura and Alps mountains ranges.
