Flat-head Leafhopper

Cicadellidae

Description:

1cm very powerful hopper. brown and wingless with legs that would suggest Membracoidea family

Habitat:

On plants in a small garden beneth an Ironbark tree. Probably hopped off its twig due to a disturbance or joyful abandon

Notes:

so far all searches of the keys come up against the need for wings to make the next step in identity

Thanks Mark The legs I think put us into Cicadellidae. (Leafhoppers) and I have changed the id. Probably not spittlebugs This guy was a jumper with a capital J. I am sure I have seen this one somewhere when I was browsing the keys but it may have had wings as you say. My download speed is fossil slow so hunting through the keys is a bit of a task.

I like the translucency. The winglessness may be due to it being a nymphal form. The shape of the head doesn't suggest Membracids to me. (best known for their 'enlarged and ornate pronotum'). Maybe more like Cicadellidae - leafhoppers? spittlebugs? froghoppers?
