Lappet Moth

Kunugia sp.

Description:

A rather large, dark coloured moth with its abdomen prominently extended beyond the wings. White striations on wings.

Habitat:

Above the door of a room at a homestay in the Himalayan foothills. It was there all night, near a light bulb and gone by dawn so I could not get a photo under natural light.

Notes:

It has been ID-ed as either a Platyja or a Suana spp. on a Moth Forum.

Thank you, Ornithoptera. Good to see you back after a gap.

Nice find!
It is a lappet moth, not Platyja. Even though the genus Suana looks quite similar, the white tuft of scales closer to the thorax are more consistent with the genus Kunugia, especially since the one you found was a male specimen.
