Lanius senator
The Woodchat Shrike is a striking medium sized passerine bird known for its bold behavior and distinctive appearance. It measures about 16-18 cm in length, and it sports a striking appearance with a red-brown crown, a black mask across its eyes, and a white forehead and throat. The upper parts are predominantly brown, while the underparts are creamy white with brown streaks. Juveniles are duller and browner compared to adults. Both sexes look similar, although the female may be slightly less boldly colored.
Woodchat shrike favors open country with scattered trees and bushes, typical of Mediterranean landscapes. It is often found in olive groves, orchards, and along woodland edges, such was the case here. The presence of prominent perches such as tall shrubs, wires, or poles is crucial for its hunting and territorial display.
1. The Woodchat Shrike breeds in the warmer parts of western Europe and the western Mediterranean basin, extending east into northwest Iran. It is a migratory bird, wintering in the savannahs and open woodlands of tropical Africa. 2. And, once again, Morocco is treating kindly my birdwatcher list, providing yet another lifer.
