Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Description:

Large, black butterfly that iridesces blue. Red blotching and orange spots at tips of forewings.

Habitat:

Edge of forest, resting on mud and pine needles in a sunlit clearing (after heavy rain).

Notes:

This butterfly mimics the poisonous pipevine swallowtail and is the southern sub-species of Limenitis arthemis.
