A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Gasteracantha cancriformis
Saw her while walking through a park in Lima. This is a very common species in the americas and is often present in gardens and parks. It's about 1cm wide with six abdominal spines; the cephalothorax and legs are black, while the abdomen is white with black markings; the spines are red, but this species can be found in many different colour variations. Apparently it's a very short-lived species: they hatch in Winter, reach maturity and die after reproducing in Spring.
Woodland edges and gardens with thick vegetation.
