Wasp Nest

Description:

This was a very interesting nest. It didn't have a pedicel. It had a central chamber with an entrance hole, exposed partly finished cells on the bottom and some long mud cells fixed to the outer surface. The nest was only about 12 cm in diameter. The wasps were small, aggressive and black with yellow markings. As I was taking pictures, more and more wasps came out of the entrance and began covering the nest.

Habitat:

Attached to the stone ceiling of a chamber, Mayan ruins of Chicanná, Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul.
