Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Description:

Bald eagle at different locations on uncovering tidal flats

Habitat:

Temperate Pacific coastal estuarine ecosystem

Notes:

Spotted in the Quatse River estuary south of Port Hardy BC; the tide was ebbing at the time the images were recorded, hundreds of salmon were swimming upstream to spawn and many birds had gathered for a fish dinner; in the second image, the eagle is having its dinner; in the third, it seems to be staring down a juvenile, while a gull and a raven wait for "table scraps;" in the third, it is standing atop its catch, but this image was included primarily for the remarkable appearance of its eye; imaged at maximum zoom using a point-and-shoot digital camera
