Figure of eight

Diloba caeruleocephala

Description:

The forewing has a white stigma which is shaped like the figure eight, from which the moth gets its name.

Habitat:

Caterpillar feeds on the hawthorn (Cratagus oxyacantha) and various fruit trees; and on the twigs of these (especially the hawthorn) the little clusters of eggs may be seen during the winter.

Notes:

An autumnal species mainly associated with woodland clearings and old mature hedgerows.
