Dynastine Beetle - female

Dasygnathus trituberculatus

Description:

A bulky glossy black beetle about 23 mm long with fossorial front legs, a smooth rounded thorax and ridged elytra. The posterior part of the abdomen looked rounded and slightly broader than the anterior part. The labrum had a lump of dried clay stuck to it. Antennae had three leaflets. The underside of the beetle was partially covered with dense orange "fur".

Notes:

When disturbed, the beetle made a persistant screeching sound which could be heard for almost a minute after she took cover and could be heard from a few feet away.
