European garden spider

Araneus diadematus

Description:

Two individuals of the European garden spider were found during the search for fungi in the Hoornse bos (Forest of Hoorn) on Terschelling, one of the Dutch Frisian Islands. One building its web, the other waiting in the centre of the orb for a prey to fly in its web.

Habitat:

Both spiders were situated near the border of a heathland. The orb was positioned between two bushes of Calluna vulgaris, common heather.
